A new lift pump just fitted to a Leyland 154; the glass bowl is to the side of the main pump body, and is ideal for trapping any water coming from the fuel tank.

All the rubbish that the fine gauze filter fitted in the lift pump can trap: it is surprising that any fuel got through at all.

Possible Problems

Although fairly reliable in service, there are several things that can go wrong. The diaphragm being made of a flexible material can deteriorate through age, allowing fuel to run possibly into the engine sump via the hole through which the pump lever engages with the cam, or to dribble down the side of the engine block. However, it is more likely that a small pin hole may develop, which will only reveal itself by tell-tale bubbles rising in the glass bowl (if one is fitted to your type of lift pump); this very soon stops the engine, as the air inevitably reaches the injector pump. The one-way valves can also fail, as muck in the fuel can lodge under the valve seat; hopefully there should be a filter fitted to the fuel tap in the fuel tank, although it is not unknown for this to be knocked off in service, and sometimes the fine spring inside the non-return valves can fail.

LIFT PUMP REFURBISHMENT

Taking the pump to pieces is relatively straightforward, as it is only held to the engine by two studs, and obviously two fuel pipes are connected to it. Once off the tractor it may pay to clean the outside of the pump body in a parts washer before attempting to take it apart, as the outside is invariably covered by a crust of diesel and dust.
